Is the source format detected automatically?

Yes. The tool looks at the timing syntax and header: SRT uses comma milliseconds, VTT starts with WEBVTT, ASS contains Dialogue lines, and SBV uses YouTube-style comma-separated times. The detected format and cue count are shown.

Does converting lose the styling?

Accepted Answer

Timings and line breaks are preserved exactly. ASS style tags such as font and colour are dropped when converting to SRT, VTT or SBV, because those formats cannot carry rich text. Converting the other way generates a standard default style sheet.
